August- Making the most of the last month of Summer

We came into August with a mixture of exhaustion and excitement. I was still so tired from a busy July and trying to keep the kids busy and entertained for a few more weeks before we got into the school schedule. We had a few more things to mark off our Summer bucket list.

Number one: Build a pergola. Our patio was just asking for a pergola. Jared did an awesome job and we are so happy with it. We plan on planting a honeysuckle next year to grow on it.

We tried out straw curlers on Ellie. You use drinking straws and twist the hair around.

The results were pretty fun.

Number two: Antique shopping and visiting Bethany in Logan. I know Logan has a reputation for having awesome antique stores so when Bethany said she lived right next to one we went to visit. We got a cute kids rocking chair, had a yummy lunch, drove up Logan canyon and ate ice cream. It was a really fun day.

Ellie riding her bike and pulling her wagon like Denis the Menace

Number three: We had to get in a few more hikes. Our friends came up from Salt Lake and we hiked to the Green Pond at Snowbasin Resort then ate lunch in the valley at one of our favorite parks.

Miss Lucy. She loves coloring and sorting crayons. She likes zippers and buckles but gets really frustrated when they don't work the way she wants the to. She can finally get off the bench by herself and doesn't yell for help. Still loves her blanket and sucks her fingers. She lacks hair but has plenty of spunk.

Getting in another hike with our ladies hiking club. We hiked the hidden valley trail. We had tried this trail earlier in the summer and made a wrong turn, lost the train and had to turn back. This time we knew the right way to go and did the entire loop.

Took a drive up to Powder Mountain. Gosh its a steep road to get up there, even in our beefy car. The view is amazing though.

Number four: THE ECLIPSE! Originally I wasn't that excited, I didn't think we would see much of it. We bought some glasses just in case and waiting until the time was right. It was pretty cool. We hung out outside, took pictures with our phones through the glasses, saw the shadows on the fence and watched as the light changed. It was really fun.

Number Five: Weekend at the Brighton Cabin. Jared did some trade work and we got to stay at this awesome cabin for the weekend. It was right up the road from Silver Lake which is one of our favorite places. We got there, unloaded the groceries, checked out the place and went for a walk. We got back and we were excited about going in the hot tub until we found out the hard way there was a bees nest underneath it. Poor Ellie got stung by a bee. We went to bed that night and the kids slept horribly. By the next morning I was ready to go home. We decided to go for a hike and we would decide if we would go home after. Our hike was awesome, a little long but Ellie was a champ, until she fell and rock about split herself in half. We made it back, ate lunch at the lodge while the weather took a turn for the worse. We headed back to the cabin, decided to try to stay the night, got cozy and watched Netflix. We got a visit from a Moose and the girls slept much better after a long day. We drove home the next day through Park City with plans to stop and hang out a bit. Well Lucy threw up in the car right when we got there so we jetted home. It was an eventful trip and one that really tested being a parent.

Lucy's new post bath trick. The key is sticky feet. Ellie can make it all the way up the smaller door jam.

Jared got me a bike for my birthday we were excited to take it out for a spin. Such a fun family bike ride.

And just like that Summer is over.

Ellie's First day of Kindergarten. She is going to Wasatch Elementary, a cute little school a few blocks away. We walk there most days. If we walk to school and I walk to pick her up I end up walking 2 miles a day with is great for me. Her teacher is Mrs. VanDyke who is 82. Everyone had wonderful things to say about her and she is just the sweetest lady. She has retired twice and come back to teaching because she loves it some much. She encourages singing in class and when we pick the kids up at the end of the day they stand on the steps and sing a song. Ellie is loving it, really excelling and I am blown away that in a few short month she is reading. Kindergarten teachers are like wizards. Ellie's made new friends and I have to. It's been nice to have a few chances to engage in adult conversation while dropping off and picking up. The best part is that her teacher tells them everyday "she loves them more than chocolate cake".
